One Flew Over

by Duncan Ebedes

Dimensions: 100cm x 75cm

Original Painting – At 22, my family, friends, and relatives had washed their hands of me. Addicted to everything except prescription drugs (though those would come later—another story for another painting), I had lost my place in the world. Society didn’t know what to do with me. Beyond the countless rehabs I cycled through, I spent much of my time in psychiatric hospitals—both in South Africa and the UK.
These institutions, often forgotten by the world, were filled with some of the most beautiful minds and tender spirits I’ve ever known—human beings rejected and cast aside. I witnessed so much pain in those places: many were abused, over-medicated, and lost forever. Most didn’t make it.
And yet, amidst all the despair, I found a strange sense of belonging. For the first time, I felt at home. We sang together. We danced. We cried. We shared in our common afflictions and found solace in one another’s company.
There are far too many brilliant souls in this world who are rejected, misunderstood, and ultimately destroyed simply because they’re different. But here’s the truth: God has forgiveness for the broken and mercy for the weak.
I’m one of the “lucky” ones—spared, perhaps, to tell my story through art. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from it all, it’s this: sometimes, the ones who “fly over” see the world most clearly.
“I’m not just talking about one person, I’m talking about everybody, I’m talking about form, I’m talking about content, I’m talking about interrelationships. I’m talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven.”
