Over the past weeks, I’ve been wandering through the West Coast and into the folds of the Cederberg, chasing a dream — a new space, a studio, a large, quiet place to paint, surrounded by God’s majestic creation. I’ve been looking for land, barns, old warehouses… somewhere with bones and breath.
But along the way, I keep finding something unexpected: derelict farmhouses, crumbling and scattered across these wild and breathtaking landscapes. They sit like forgotten stories — walls leaning, windows broken, roofs sagging. Yet, despite their state, there’s something beautiful about them. A quiet soulfulness that refuses to fade.
These old places make me wonder about the lives they once held. Families. Fireplaces. Storms weathered and seasons passed. And I think not just of what they were, but what they could still become.
A house can lose its structure, its roof might cave in, the walls may crumble — but if the foundation is still strong, and someone believes in it enough to give it care, it can be rebuilt. Even when things appear to be in ruin, there is still the possibility of renewal. There is strength in what endures, and beauty in what survives. This is derelict grace — the quiet promise that what is broken can be rebuilt again.
