A little more about my painting process. Firstly, I know very little about art. I started painting just under two years ago, and back then, all I could paint were colorful little circles with a sponge—so that’s what I did. I’m still learning all the fancy art terms, and just the other day, someone asked me who my favorite artist is. I told them it’s that guy who painted the Moana Lisa—I think his name is Leonardo DiCaprio… He was also the captain on the Titanic or something.
So how can I paint? Because nobody told me I couldn’t.
I spend over 10 hours every day in my studio, obsessing over how to bring to life the vision etched into my heart. I do not stop until it has fully materialized on the canvas. I don’t listen to the world, and I don’t follow trends. I paint first and foremost for the Lord, and then for myself. This is what defines my authenticity.
If I want to learn how to paint the sea, sketching it a hundred times won’t give me its depth. The answer isn’t repetition—it’s experience.
I have to step into its world. I stand at the water’s edge as the tide rushes in, feeling the icy pull of the current around my ankles. I hear the roar of the waves, their rhythm shifting between chaos and calm. I smell the salt, thick in the air. I watch how the light dances across the surface, constantly changing, never still. I see how the horizon fades into mist, how the water darkens before a storm, how moonlight turns it silver.
Above it all, the clouds move—restless, shifting with the wind, dissolving and reforming like thoughts in the sky. Some pass unnoticed, others leave behind traces of their presence, shaping the light, bending the mood of the ocean below. Like time itself, they never stand still.
Only when I have truly lived the sea—when I have let it surround me, move me, and humble me—only then can I truly bring it to life on the canvas.
This is how I paint. This is Monochrome Tide. By Abstract Artist Dunc Ebedes
